New data on child health in Germany

The German Federal Environment Agency has unveiled the results of the fourth German Environmental Survey (GerES IV).

GerES provides data on exposure of Germany’s population to environmental pollutants. GerES IV was conducted in the period of May 2003 - May 2006. According to UBA it is the first environmental survey referring exclusively to the examination of children and their environmental exposure. The survey was based on the examination of both blood and urine samples from the children aged 3 to 14 years as well as house dust and drinking water samples from the corresponding households.

In the current volume entitled „Human Biomonitoring“, the basic description of the levels of a variety of substances in the blood and urine of children in Germany is given. These substances include arsenic, lead, cadmium, nickel, mercury, HCH, HCB, DDE, PCB, nicotine, cotinine, PCP and other chlorophenols, as well as metabolites of organophosphate pesticides, of PAH and of pyrethroids.

In the future, the results of similar evaluation will be presented in the different series. For updated information on the publications related to GerES IV see http://www.umweltbundesamt.de/survey/.
