Directive 2006/121/EC contains technical adaptations of Directive 67/548/EEC that are necessary in the light of the new REACH Regulation (Directive 67/548 concerns the classification, packaging and labelling of dangerous substances and applies in parallel with REACH).

Future

Over the next 11 years, REACH will require the registration of some 30 000 chemicals, at an estimated cost of €2.8 -5.2 billion.

This is a fraction of its estimated health benefits, for if REACH succeeds in reducing chemical-related diseases by only 10% over the next 30 years, it is expected to achieve savings of up to 50 billion.

However, many key decisions on identifying and regulating hazardous chemicals are still to be taken and depend on future reviews.
